or The degree of difficulty of cleaning the window is determined by its type
(more precisely, the way it is opened)
Not all windows can be opened so that you can wash them.
And if it is not possible to clean them from the outside, they must be dismantled.
That's why here's a tutorial:
How to prepare windows for washing
Opening and closing of window sashes can take place in different modes: tilt , swing , tilt .
These manipulations with the window are possible thanks to the so-called fittings . Fittings are classified according to the method of opening the sash and direction, as well as according to its weight.
It is an internal mechanical system that is fitted in the grooves of the frame and wing.
We control this system with a window handle, which can usually be turned 180 degrees on a tilt and turn window. The 90 degree position is the opening position and the 180 degree position is the opening position for the sash.
Many windows can be opened like a book (horizontally and vertically), giving full access to the exterior glass.
The least problematic are pivoting (opening inwards or outwards depending on the location of the outer face), swinging and tilting (facing inward) windows.
However, there are also those that do not provide complete access, as their manipulation possibilities are limited by a special purpose, specific function or construction subject to, for example, exclusively design.
As a rule, these are tilting (outward), tilting (roof), sliding (usually roof) and, of course, fixed windows...
The most common way to make the window accessible for washing
As a rule, for all types, by closing to an angle of 15° and:
by pulling the scissor hinge up or down from the window;
by manually releasing the latch on the scissor arm, which causes the window to swing into the cleaning position.
Access to the outside of all double-hung windows (except fixed) allows the lock to be unlocked at the top, bottom or side of the frame. Usually by moving the latch (tilt lock, opening limiter, sash rotation lock) to the opposite side.
But most of them only provide a small open space, which makes cleaning difficult. Additionally, not all double-hung windows fold inward.
Location of safety locks on scissors:
Window scissors are known by many names (scissor handlebars, scissor cuffs, axle arm or handlebar tape).
It is important to distinguish between functional, catching and cleaning scissors. Functional scissors are described above. Catching and cleaning shears are window shears that are additionally mounted on large window sashes as a safety device. However, it only engages when the functional scissor fails or the sash is removed from the functional scissor for cleaning purposes.
Hopefully this guide on how to prepare windows for washing has helped you at least a little.
Some of our customers have admitted to relying on specialized tools such as a U-shaped cleaning rod with a washer and squeegee on both ends to clean the outside of their windows. When they found out how clumsy (and time consuming) these rods were, they decided to hire professionals instead.
With enough experience, quality tools and cleaning products, most people can effectively clean the inside of windows - but the outside is a completely different story...
