Basic window maintenance

Updated: Aug 18

or So that the windows are not only pretty

It's not enough for the windows to be pretty - the windows have to work too!

In order for the windows to seal properly, not to creak, not to stick, not to get stuck, or so that unpleasant melusin does not settle in them over time, it is necessary at least once a year

basic window maintenance.

Seal replacement

Seal treatment and replacement

In order to eliminate the risk of heat loss in the winter months and to prevent unpleasant blowing of the window in autumn, it is necessary to rub their seals with the appropriate oil (silicone, glycerin) at least once a year (preferably before the onset of winter), which will ensure flexibility and a longer service life.

Mineral oils, table oils, etc. are completely unsuitable.

If the gasket shows signs of wear (or does not return to its original shape when felt), replace it with a new one. Uncompromisingly. In this case, there is no small or large wear - the problem arises in just a millimeter of leakage...

Basic profiles of window seals

It is better to entrust the replacement of the seals to a professional company, but if you are manually skilled and trust yourself…

Pull out the old or damaged gasket from the groove and push the new one back into it. Buy the gasket where you bought the windows, because every window has a different frame profile, a different wide groove.

Notice

Avoid gaskets when cleaning frames – cleaning agents reduce their elasticity and shorten their lifespan! Soapy water is enough to clean it.

Hardware maintenance

All windows (except fixed ones) have so-called fittings that allow manipulation (opening - closing) and ensure safety (locking).

Maintenance of this fitting means lubricating all functional (moving) parts with oil, preferably silicone-based (WD-40, sewing machine oil), or special oil directly from the window manufacturer - definitely do not use table oil or oils containing acids or resins.

First, clean all metal parts with a damp cloth (in case of heavy contamination, use denatured alcohol). Then apply oil to hinge pins, tie rods and locking points. A few drops into the lubrication holes (see picture) will suffice.

On this occasion, check and, if necessary, tighten the screws of the individual parts of the fittings, as well as the handles, which loosen over time (you can usually reveal these screws by moving the plastic cover under the handle).

Notice

When cleaning the frame, make sure that the cleaning agent does not get on the fittings, as this would damage its corrosion protection.

Checking the drainage system

The windows are designed with drainage systems that prevent water from accumulating in the structure - or serves for the escape of rainwater, which from time to time gets between the frame and the window sash. When water does not drain properly to the exterior, it can flow into the interior and cause damage.

Therefore, it is more than advisable to check the condition of these drains every time you wash the windows and frames. The drainage channels can be found in the lower part of the frame after opening the window. The drains are accessible after removing the plastic covers on the outside a few centimeters from the windowsill.

You can check the functionality simply: pour a small amount of water into the inner frame. If the water drains through the external drain holes or slot, the system is clean.

If the water does not flow or flows slowly, poke the channel with a cotton swab, wire, match or toothpick. Repeat until clear water comes out of the hole.

Tips

Try using sunscreen to remove alcohol marker from plastic window frames. It is non-aggressive and ecological. Lubricate the marker mark with a little cream and wipe with a dry, clean cloth.

Wash the wooden surfaces of the window frames with soapy water and once in a while rub them with floor paste (parquet wax) and polish them - this will prevent the accumulation of dust, and by occasionally polishing them, you will make their maintenance easier.
